Summer – The vacation time, with loved ones at our favorite destinations like water parks, parks, beaches, hill stations, etc, – is undoubtedly the most awaited time of the year. Amongst all these fun and frolic, at the end what we really hate is the Skin tan and Sun burns. Sun burns can also be a common problem for people working outdoors, or engaged in outdoor activities. These Sun burns can at time, really be very painful and leaves unwanted marks and patches on skin, thus spoiling one’s beauty and appearance. Application of chemical based sunscreens and cosmetic creams are not always safe; they can cause further skin darkening or irritation of skin. Here in this article we shall know about few safe, easy and natural remedies against sun burns. Sun burn is an inflammatory skin condition which occurs due to over exposure to ultraviolet sunrays. With the onset of summer, and the raised temperature, it is but normal that many of us bring about small changes in diet and routine. The warm clothes are replaced by light coloured cotton clothings, some start intake of cold drinks or cold water over warm sips of water, tea, coffee and/or soups, fresh fruits, juices and etc,etc… One more inclusion or advise which is very common, ‘Have a bowl of curd or curd rice- to keep cool’. How true and appropriate is this? Now lets see what Ayurveda says about curd – “।। अम्लपाकरसं ग्राहि गुरुष्णं दधि वातजित्।। मेदःशुक्रबलश्र्लेष्मपित्तरक्ताग्निशोफक्रृत् । रोचिष्णु शस्तमरुचौ शीतके विषमज्वरे।। पीनसे मूत्रकृच्छ्रे च रूक्षं तु ग्रहणीगदे। नैवाद्यान्निशि नैवोष्णं वसन्तोष्णशरत्सु न।। नामुद्गसूपं नाक्षौद्रं तन्नाघृतसितोपलम्। न चानामलकं नापि नित्यं नो मन्दमन्यथा।। ज्वरासृक् पित्त वीसर्पकुष्ठपाण्डुभ्रमप्रदम्। “वा.सू.५ Curd is sour in taste and vipaak (rasa dominant after digestion), heavy to digest, contrary to everyone’s belief it is hot in potency, pacifies vata, but increases kapha and pitta dosha. Sciatica or Gridhrasi is a severe painful condition affecting the posterior aspect of one or both the lower limbs. The pain radiates along the path of sciatic nerve which has its origin at the back of the pelvis from the lumbosacral vertebrae. This excruciating pain originates in lower back, hip, thigh, calf muscles and ends up in the toe. The pain is the result of either compression of the nerve due to any reason like stenosis of spinal canal, accidental injury, fall, degenerative changes in the intervertebral disc, slipped disc – in which the disc buldge – exerts pressure on the nerve root involving sciatic nerve OR inflammation of muscles of the supporting tissues of the sciatic nerves of the leg. Health as per Ayurveda means equilibrium of all the three doshas, seven dhatus, three mala, and Agni. Summer season or Grishma rutu sets in increased body temperature, it aggravates pitta and triggers physical and mental symptoms in the body like excessive thirst, weakness, sunburns,acidity, anger, impatience, irritation, and much more. External heat can be settled down with the use of air conditioners, coolers, fans, etc.but the internal chilling can only be achieved by proper diet and lifestyle. The chilly winter, not only brings with it manageable cold and cough, but also painful throat, and tonsillitis. Salt water gargles doesn’t always prove helpful. Add 1 tsp of Yashtimadhu (glycerrhiza glabra) and pinch of turmeric to cup of water, boil the mixture, strain and add ½ tsp of salt. Gargling with this medicated water relieves throat pain and inflammation. These gargles also remove the congested cough in the throat.

Ayurveda is an eternal, immortal ancient indian medical science. It has its origin from the Vedas, which are believed to have their existence right from the beginning of this universe.
